The first thing that I did was to learn how to use the computer – people had shown me little bits here and there – once everybody had gone, just playing around with it on my own to see what I could make it do. Enough to get by: I am not a computer wizard. I was spending hours playing around with the computer to see what it did. Then I found the net and found music sites on it, basically looking for information on rock and roll singers. Then one link led to another and I found music. I never liked music at school.
A favourite is ‘boys’ and their ‘under-achievement’. As if social class, ethnicity and sexuality had no influence on school performance. As if what is significant for some boys would be significant for all. As if all boys related to masculinity in the same way. As if there were only one kind of masculinity. For equality to work, it is important to see that the problems of justice that groups face will not necessarily be amenable to similar solutions in terms of voice, recognition and material redistribution.
It is hard for any of us to imagine who we might be if we could change our nationality, our race, our sex, or if we moved to some other part of the world to live. The philosopher Hannah Arendt was never going to be able to escape the issue of diversity.
